ANALYSIS Barbatos has most of the attributes of the Greek Orpheus, which gathered animals around him when he played his lyre, communicating with them through his poetry and music. His death is said to have taken place violently by a group of wild women, who tore him apart and threw his head (still singing) into a river. The nine muses then gathered the pieces of Orpheus and buried them on Mount Olympus. From then on, nearby birds began to sing more sweetly, influenced by the presence of Orphic energy. The conciliation of friendships, the healing of sorrows and the influence on the powerful is achieved with his poetry and music, and the obtaining of treasures is achieved when Orpheus sleeps or tames the guardians who take care of riches (as in the myth of Cerberus). In the manifestation of Barbatos, the archetype of Orpheus presents itself in a more ancient and wiser way, therefore approaching Saturn, and in this case the knowledge of the past and the future becomes one of his attributes. In astrology, Barbatos can be associated with Saturn (the Elder, with knowledge of time) and also with Chiron (knowledge of nature and communication with animals, as well as healing). As in the Major Arcana The Force, Barbatos uses his inner power to tame beasts and control lions, without resorting to brute force or violence. The tradition and elder character are also reflected in The Hermit Arcana. Also, coherently, these cards are related to Orpheus and Saturn.
